Review - The Deep by Jen Minkman @JenMinkman (The Island #3)

The Deep
The Island #3
by Jen Minkman

Goodreads blurb:  ‘The world is never-ending.
I never realized just how much space there is – how far and wide the water around our island stretches out. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I may have believed that a second Wall ran around Tresco, containing the infinite waters so we wouldn’t all wash over the edge and plummet down into the depths.’

Leia and Walt are on their way to the Other Side, where the legendary land of Cornwall awaits them. Tony, their new friend, has told them that all wars of the past have been forgotten and the citizens of Bodmin and Dartmoor live in peace. People adhere to the tenets of an old religion that preaches forgiveness and non-violence.
However, Walt and Leia soon discover that even a peace-loving, ideal society like this one may have its flaws. While on a forbidden trip to Exeter, the old city of their ancestors, the two Islanders discover more about the new world than they ever bargained for.

Secrets run dark and passions run deep in this thrilling conclusion to the Island novella series

About the Author:  Jen Minkman (1978) was born in Holland, in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn. When she was 19, she moved between The Hague, Salzburg (Austria), Brussels (Belgium) and Cambridge (UK) to complete her studies in intercultural communication. She is currently a teacher of English and Dutch at a secondary school in The Hague, Holland. She tries to read at least 100 books a year (and write a few, too!). She is a published author in her own country, and translates her own books from Dutch into English for self-publication.
In her spare time, she plays the piano, the guitar and the violin. For every novel she writes, she creates a soundtrack.

'I have always been drawn to writing. My first book was a sci-fi novel at the age of eight, which I painstakingly typed out on my dad's typewriter and illustrated myself. Nowadays, I stick to poetry, paranormal romance, chicklit and/or fantasy. In my home country, I am the first-ever published writer of paranormal romance, and I will gradually make my books also available in English (seeing I have to re-write and translate the books myself, this will take some time!).

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!!
***Received the trilogy ebook via Story Cartel for an honest review

The cover is beautiful with Alisa on the front :)

This book was longer and definitely had more action :)  I think for me this was the best of the trilogy.  It did still have a few parts that were a little slow for me, but I’m pretty sure this was just me because I do not usually read books that resemble real life this much :)

Jen’s writing style is great with her descriptions and makes it seem like all of this could really happen.

Now I’m torn because I don’t know who I like better Leia or Alisa.  Their strength and beliefs are amazing considering they grew up in completely different environments.  Saul & Ben really grow on you too in this story.  This book definitely had an emotional rollercoaster going.

I recommend this series to YA fans of dystopian societies that could be a possible real world in the future.

Launch

What do you hope readers will take with them when they read this last book in the series?
To me, things really come full circle with the characters, their relationships, and the dilemma of facing their lot in life. I think they've learned a lot, they've definitely been through some trials, but it was nice to give them that sense of understanding and the chance to see how things truly are. They had to either accept it or fight to the end, but it was nice to give them the choice.

Letters from Annie (Douglass) Lima - Chapter One

Heat pulsed through the warehouse, liquid fire pushed by some unseen force. Metal screamed and block crumbled, tearing away every protection she had from the gale. But it was not the light of fire that accompanied the wind, not the brightness of a flame. It was dark beneath the haze of fog.

It was a shadow...

Kelly P's Blog - Chapter One Cont'd

“No,” she whispered. “I’m sorry for what’s about to happen.” She tilted her head, drawing it from beneath his chin to look again at the amber of his eyes, the glow that was within them before suddenly stronger than she’d ever seen it. “I’m sorry for what I’ve set into motion...”

BookSkater - Chapter Two
“I’m ready,” the dark-haired man said, hands fisted at his sides. He was a complete contradiction to his audience, but he didn’t care. He wanted her. He would take her himself. “Let me at her before she has the chance to get any stronger...”

My Life, Loves and Passion - Chapter Three

Aern’s weight shifted, unconsciously moving toward her. He’d known the battle with Morgan was not the end. He’d seen it in Brianna’s eyes, felt it in her apology. They’d set some new chain of events into motion, brought some new fate down on them all...

Prism Book Tours - Chapter Three Cont'd

And here was the more Aern had thought he’d seen in Brianna’s expression. Because she’d known, once she’d found the connections to free herself and Emily, that they were not in place from centuries ago. Those binds, the ones that had kept their powers hidden, were put in place after they’d been born. And the only thing strong enough to do so would have been another shadow...

Book n Blog - Chapter Three Cont'd
“The thing is,” Brianna said, shifting just enough that her admission was directed to both of them, “the thing that doesn’t make sense is that she permitted us to be bound, chose this path for us, brought us to you.” She hesitated, eyes falling first to Aern and then lingering a heartbeat too long on Logan. “Because the shadows are the reason,” she wet her lips, “the ones who took the power from the Seven Lines to begin with.”

Mythical Books - Chapter Three Cont'd

Aern stared at her, everything that he’d learned in his youth rolling through his mind. The Seven Lines had once been powerful, able to do much more than simply use sway. Something had happened, something they’d called a thinning of the blood, that had slowly weakened their powers until no more than this remained. He wanted to not believe her. He wanted to keep thinking the stories they’d been told were true...

Christy's Cozy Corners - Chapter Four
But that slim blonde was gone now, taken when these men had invaded Westlake and destroyed the right half of her body. All that was left of her was the warrior, the daughter of a council elder with the blood of Sky. She was strong. She’d downed seven of their men before they’d strapped her into a truck and drove away from the fire and destruction that was the Division headquarters...

Book-Marks the Spot - Chapter Four Cont'd

His head hung, but he looked at Ellin from beneath his brow, swollen and bruised, cut and bleeding. She could still see the unhealed scars from the day he’d released Morgan. The day he’d tried to save their prophet. He wouldn’t give her now, not any single bit of information that would help them. He would never turn on Brianna...

Simplistic Reviews - Chapter Four Cont'd

He crouched beside her, fingertips rolling over his thumbs, and cocked one brow. “You know the rules Miss Walker. If you want to stop me from hurting Mr. Samuels, you’ll need to give me an answer in return.”

She swallowed against the thickness in her throat, new blood working free of her wounds. Her chest ached, fear and panic and unadulterated adrenaline.

Still, she managed to say, “Please, call me Ellin.”

He laughed. A short, shallow huff of air that said she’d surprised him, but it couldn’t have been true humor...

Wishful Endings - Chapter 5

He sighed. “We can’t leave him to …” He broke off, frustrated at their lack of information, and said, “Whatever he’s doing, Brianna, it’s wrong. We have to find him. He held you captive. He was working with Morgan.” His list stopped as he realized they had the key...

Katie's Clean Book Collection - Chapter 5 Cont'd

Brianna stood as well. “That’s not why you can’t go after him.” She’d been thinking about this for days, since before she’d known about Brendan. Since she’d realized what she and Emily were. She didn’t know if it was right, if it was the plan her mother had laid in place, but she wouldn’t be able to live with doing anything different. She had to protect them...

Nocturnal Predators Reviews - Chapter 5 Cont'd
Her eyes were closed, but she could feel him watching her as his hands stilled. A thumb rolled slowly up the side of her neck and she breathed deep, relaxing into the feel of his fingers as they came higher to trail feather-light over her cheek, her temple, barely brushing her eyelid. Logan's breath came out in what might have been a whisper, and then she felt him move, lips touching hers so gently that she couldn’t resist reaching for him, to pull him closer where he leaned over her...

Mary Terrani.com - Chapter 6

Aern stood in front of Brianna, hands clasped with hers as she searched his connections. He could feel Emily behind him from her spot on the edge of the sofa. He didn’t need to look to imagine her, hands twisted as she watched her sister work to restore some long-gone power within him. The bond was changing, becoming stronger—more real every moment—and it was as if he could sense her distress. This wasn’t some experiment to work toward a vague prophecy. This was Brianna’s last-chance gamble to try and save them from a vision she knew was true, a fight that was coming to them. A war they couldn’t escape...

My Devotional Thoughts - Chapter 6 Cont'd
“We think she’s trying to tell us about Brendan,” Eric said from behind them, his voice quiet.

Aern watched as Ellin’s eye closed tighter. “No,” he said. “Brianna. She’s trying to warn us about Brianna.” A grateful breath escaped her and she opened her eye to close it again, in a long blink. A yes...

His thumb slid over her cheek. “Don’t worry, Ellin. We have her. She’s safe.” Her gaze moved to his, another warning, and he answered, “We know they’re coming for her, but she’s safe...”

The Written Adventure - Chapter 6 Cont'd

“And if they find us?” Eric said.

Aern glanced at the door that Ellin’s cart had disappeared behind, remembering her broken body. As if they had played with her, taken their time. Brianna’s face when she’d described Brendan, when she’d said the others were coming.

His gaze met Eric’s, tone even. “Pray...”

The Wonderings of One Person - Chapter 7

It was time. She was getting stronger, finding her own answers, and it was going to be too late. He couldn’t go to her, the shadows had warned him against that, but there would be no call for issue if Brianna found him. If she initiated the contact. Come to me, Brianna, he thought. Come to me and I will show you why your kind is hiding...

Dalene's Book Reviews - Chapter 8

Logan’s lips pursed. “Hot dogs are over rated.”

She shook her head, shifting so that her denim-covered leg touched his. “You’re cooking them wrong.”

He laughed, turning to see her. “How’s that?”

“You have to smother them in chili and that radioactive-yellow cheese sauce, and then you cover the whole thing with a bag of corn chips...”

Deal Sharing Aunt - Chapter 8 Cont'd
She smirked. “They’re going to be a bit like Morgan, I’m afraid. They’re very proud of their power.” Her eyes went unfocused as she studied the visions, a set of futures where the lesser shadows sought her out. She couldn’t see them, exactly, but she could glimpse the events, knew the way things would unfold. She was hunting in the darkness, searching for bits of light in fog. These shadows weren’t as quick and ruthless, not like the others, but she knew that was coming, too. “Not all of them,” she said. “The men behind this, they aren’t in it for the glory.” She shivered, finding the last of the visions, the scenes too hard to relive. “They only want the outcome...”

Review - Biker Bear Love by Harper Ashe

Biker Bear Love
by Harper Ashe

Goodreads blurb:  You're Invited to Take a Romantic Ride With Destiny!

An Alpha Bear Who Must Find His Mate...

When his small clan of bear shifters is murdered, Alex Andreas embarks on a quest to find more of his kind. But before the lone Alpha can begin his search by heading to the Colorado Rockies, he must lose the band of Hunters that are pursuing him and find his mate: a curvy, brunette beauty who isn't even aware that a touch of bear blood runs through her veins.

A BBW Who Takes a Chance on Fate...

Nina Parks is having a lousy night. First, her ex-boyfriend's new fiancé ruins Friday night happy hour. Then she finds a crashed motorcycle in her driveway. Not only that: the hunky, leather-wearing rider is injured and refuses to go to the hospital. Nina agrees to help the sexy biker, only to find that his injuries aren't from his crash and now they're both in danger!

Will They Take a Ride with Destiny?

Pulled into Alex's world, where nothing is quite what it seems and she isn't sure who to trust, Nina finds herself torn between the man of her dreams and the life he wants her to leave behind. When the truth is finally revealed, will she follow her heart and join Alex on a romantic ride with destiny?

This paranormal novella is a BBW shifter romance featuring a smoking hot, motorcycle-riding were-bear and the beautiful, curvy brunette who is destined to become his mate. It is a complete story with a fateful beginning, an exciting middle, and a steamy HFN ending. (No cliffhangers!)

About the Author:  Harper Ashe writes the kind of romance she loves to read: mostly sweet, sometimes spicy, always delicious. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her handsome husband, almost-grown children and very naughty cat.

A Note from Harper Ashe:

I first realized that I wanted to be writer when I landed a gig as co-author of my high school newspaper. Once I saw my words in print (yeah, that was a long time ago!), I was hooked!

After a long and winding career in marketing and copywriting, my kids are mostly grown and I have finally have the time to write what I love most: romantic fiction.

My Thoughts - 3 out of 5 Unicorns - I liked it!!!

The cover is a sweet scene of a couple on a bike and a bear.  It is okay.

This is a novella and it is around 90 or so pages.  It is a quick read.  Parts of it for me were rushed or missing details, and I think this story line could have easily been developed into a full novel.  You just don’t know enough about the Guardians and the Council, and you really didn’t get much of a background on Nina.  All this being said it was still a great read.  I hope to see this world return so it can be more fully developed in my mind :)  I love shifter worlds.

Oh if you don’t know the acronym HFN, used in the blurb, it means Happy For Now.  I hate not knowing acronyms that are being used, so I always try to share this info.

Nina & Alex are great characters as well as Hannah.  There is a good mix of action and drama too.  With novellas, it seems to take me more than one in a series to get connected to the characters and world. This is just me though, and there is so much potential for this new shifter world. I’m not sure if this is a series, will it follow Nina & Alex or Hannah & the Council?

This is my first Harper Ashe book, but I know she has a story in a couple of the bundled sets I’ve bought….though I don’t think they are shifter stories.  I will definitely read more by Harper especially if this becomes a series because I want to know more :)

I think if you like quick shifter reads, you will enjoy reading this book.

Review - The Waves by Jen Minkman @JenMinkman (The Island #2)

The Waves
The Island #2
by Jen Minkman

Goodreads blurb:  The first memory I have of my grandfather is of a moment that we share together.
I’m sitting on his knee looking out over the harbor. Grandpa is smoking a pipe. He points at the horizon. “Look, Walt. Our ships are out there. And one day, another even more beautiful ship will appear at the horizon. A mighty ship to take us all away. And Annabelle will be at the front deck with open arms, inviting us all to join her on board.”
“Why don’t we sail to her ourselves?” I want to know.
“Because she promised she would come,” granddad replies. “And in that promise we trust. It’s only the Unbelievers who think they can do everything themselves. They have no faith in the Goddess.”

Walt lives in Hope Harbor, an island community that has put its trust in salvation from across the sea. The townspeople wait patiently, build their ships to sail out and welcome the Goddess, and piously visit the temple every week. Horror stories to scare their children are told about the Unbelievers on the other side of Tresco.
But not all is what it seems. Walt has questions that no one can answer, and when his best friend and cousin Yorrick is killed in an accident, he digs deeper to find out the truth about the origins of Hope Harbor’s society… and the secrets of the temple.

Return to the world of The Island and discover what Walt's life was like before and after he met Leia!

The cover is looks awesome and water seems to be a theme in the covers.  I love the lighthouse and birds in the background.  It is sort of like he is lost and trying to find his way since that is what lighthouses are for :)

I really enjoyed this book, and I’m really starting to connect with Walt and Leia now as well as a few others too.  I think it is amazing how Jen created very different views of history in this two sets of peoples on the same island.  I never read the blurb for this book, so I was surprised that it wasn’t about the journey across the water but instead Walt’s prospective.  I usually like a lot more action, but I enjoyed exploring the other side of the island :)

This is a cool world that I think my high school students would like to read because a lot of them like dystopian societies especially when they are realistic.  I’d like to eventually add this trilogy to my classroom library to share with my students.  I wonder what they would think like Walt or relate better to Leia.

I recommend this series to those who like dystopian YA societies and more realistic fiction.

I really liked this book and enjoyed it.  I do want to warn that some people may not like all the fighting sort of like a combination of dog fighting and gladiators.  The language could also be more than some readers are looking for.  Lots and lots of steamy scenes too!!  I like to put this out there because reading is your enjoyment.  This world is different than other shifter books, but it is hard to describe without giving too much away.  Shifters struggle to maintain balance is all I will say.

Hutch is a typical bad boy.  He’s an a$$ a lot mixed in with moments of sweetness.  Natalie is sweet, terrified of what she is because she’s never been around anyone like her, but she grows so much in this book.  Gina is awesome and funny.  There are some things that happen that I just didn’t see coming.

I recommend this to people who love werewolf shifters and fighting and don’t mind that Hutch can be an a$$, but a sexy one :)
